With the rollout of Copilot Wave 2, Microsoft is expanding generative AI across its enterprise productivity stack: SharePoint, OneDrive, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams. While foundation model developers like OpenAI and Google frequently push rapid consumer-facing updates, Microsoft’s enterprise strategy with Wave 2 is distinctly measured. Rather than introducing speculative interfaces, it focuses on embedding agents directly into existing corporate data stores and role-based access boundaries.

The core question for engineers and IT teams is twofold: does this calculated rollout solve actual workplace productivity bottlenecks, and are enterprises prepared for the governance challenges of Copilot agents operating on internal data?

Deploying generative models across global enterprises requires navigating real structural hurdles:

  1. Permission Hygiene: AI agents are only as safe as the underlying access permissions. If an organization has misconfigured folder permissions in SharePoint, a Copilot agent will expose sensitive internal documents to anyone who asks the right question.
